- Get 1 1/2 cup Cooked Rice
- Prepare 1/2 cup Sesame Seeds / Til
- Get ¼ cup Curry Leaves
- Prepare 3 tsp Chana Dal / Split Chickpeas
- Make ready 3 tsp Urad Dal / Black Gram
- Make ready 7 to 8 small (less spicy) Dry Red Chillies
- Take 2 tablespoon Oil
- Make ready 1/2 tsp Asafetida / Hing
- Get 1/2 tablespoon Salt
- Get 2 tsp Clarified Butter / Desi Ghee
- Make ready as required Cashew for Garnishing

Steps to make Sesame Rice | Ellu Sadam:
- In a heating pan, take 3 tsp of Chana Dal, 3 tsp of Urad Dal, few small less spicy Dry Red Chillies, ½ cup of Sesame Seeds (Til), 7 to 8 Curry Leaves and roast for 4 to 5 min or until light brown and gets aroma.
- Then allow the mixture to cool down completely and then grind into fine powder.
- In another preheated pan, take 2 tablespoon of Oil, ½ tsp of Hing, few Curry Leaves, 1 ½ cup of boiled and cooked Rice and ½ tsp of Salt, blended Sesame Seeds powder and mix well for 3 to 4 Mins.
- Lastly add 2 tsp of Ghee and mix well.
- Garnish with some Cashews (Kaju) and serve hot.
The recipe to make ellu sadam is similar in every home with a few variations here and there. I make sesame rice following the recipe method from samaithu paar by meenakshi ammal. Then add roasted sesame seed powder to the above and dry grind it just for a second. Our ellu podi/sesame seed powder is ready now. I love sesame seeds and this sesame rice is a delicious yet different South Indian rice recipe.
