Upma being such a popular breakfast item in South India, has many versions. This version of Upma, consists of onions, peas, spices and has the consistency of it being soft and crumbly texture. which is different then the paste like texture at many places. Onion Upma bears some resemblance to Grits, but is spicier and has added nuts. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent.

The ingredients needed to make Onion upma:
- Get 1 cup suji
- Make ready 2-3 medium sized onions or can take as required
- Take 1-2 green chilies
- Prepare 2 teaspoons urad dal
- Make ready 2-3 tablespoons oil
- Take 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- Prepare 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- Get As per taste Salt
- Get Few Curry Leaves (Curry Patta)
- Get 8-10 pieces cashewnuts (optional)
- Take As required fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
- Get 3-31/2 cup warm water
It is one of the commonly made recipes in south Indian recipes. It is called 'Uppitu'(Kannada), 'Tikhat Sanja'(Marathi), 'Suji ka namkeen halwa'(Hindi) in Indian languages.. A variety of Upma can be made out of the humble Rava/sooji /semolina. Posting an onion upma today which is a family favourite.
Steps to make Onion upma:
- Take a kadhai add suji and dry roast for 5 to 6 minutes on low heat.
- Once done remove suji from kadhai add keep aside.
- In the same kadhai oil heat well, add cashewnuts and saute till turns golden brown and keep aside.
- Then in the same kadhai as oil is already in it add mustard seeds and as it crackles.Add urad dal, Saute it for a minute.Then add curry leaves onion, green chillies
- Fry onion on medium to high heat till it changes the color to dark pinkish to brownish and translucent.
- Then add suji and mix it well. As we have already roasted so just mix well suji. Cook it for a minute or 2.
- Then,add water, and simultaneously keep stirring so that there are no lumps.
- Add salt and sugar. Keep stirring till the water is absorbed completely. Add kaju.keep few kaju for garnishing Now cover it and keep it on a low heat for 2 to 3 minutes Once done switch off the heat.
- Its ready to be served.Add upma in a plate as per the need and serve hot garnishing with kaju,coriander leaves or curry leaves. Curry leaves is optional
