The ingredients needed to make Moong Dal Khichdi:
  1. Prepare 1/2 cup moong dal (split)
  2. Make ready 1/2 cup rice
  3. Get 1 tbsp ghee or oil
  4. Get 1 tsp cumin seeds
  5. Get 1 bay leaf
  6. Make ready 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
  7. Make ready 1 onion finely chopped
  8. Make ready 1 green chilli chopped
  9. Make ready 1/2 inch ginger grated
  10. Get 1 tomato finely chopped
  11. Make ready 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  12. Make ready To taste salt
  13. Make ready as needed water
  14. Prepare 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Khichdi with a dollop of butter is amazing. It just melts in your mouth. You can also add ghee, but I'm not a fan of eating ghee raw. Khichdi also goes perfectly with yogurt and achaar (pickle).

Instructions to make Moong Dal Khichdi:
  1. Wash rice and dal together for a couple of times. Drain water completely and keep them aside.
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a pan and saute cumin seeds and bay leaf on a low flame for 1 minute.
  3. Add onion, green chilli, ginger and hing. Fry till onion turns translucent.
  4. Add tomato and cook till it turns soft and mushy.
  5. Add turmeric powder, salt and saute for few seconds. Add little water and cook for a minute or two.
  6. Now add drained moong dal and rice. Saute on a low flame for 3-4 minutes or till moong dal turns aromatic.
  7. Pour water and stir well. Season with salt. Then transfer it to a pressure cooker. Close the lid and pressure cook for 2 whistles on a medium flame for grainy consistency. And for porridge consistency cook for 4 whistles.
  8. Once the pressure settles, open the lid, add coriander leaves and mix gently.
  9. Finally serve moong dal khichdi hot or warm with curd or pickles.

You can also add ghee, but I'm not a fan of eating ghee raw. Khichdi also goes perfectly with yogurt and achaar (pickle). It lends a creamy flavor with a salty kick.
